Alex Sanchez: General Manager Policy - Economics and Taxation Directorate
Alex was appointed General Manager Economic and Taxation Directorate after extensive experience in both the public and private sectors as an economist and policy analyst, having worked in the energy sector, banking, housing and transport industries.
As Senior Policy Adviser (Economics) in the Office of the Leader of the Opposition he was responsible for tax and family payment, child care benefit and child care and trade practice reform policies.
Alex brings a wealth of international experience through consulting work on behalf of the Asian Development Bank, Waste Services NSW and the South Western Sydney Area Health Service.

Brian Francis: General Manager Corporate Services
Brian, as Company Secretary, is responsible for all obligations as required under the Corporation Law and other Statutes. He ensures that all Board and member policy directives are carried out and comply with all relevant laws. He is also responsible for ensuring that the highest standards of corporate governance are maintained and that all ASIC reporting and statutory obligations are met.
As General Manager Corporate Services, Brian is responsible for managing the general functions of the Council. This includes statutory, management, tax, general accounting, human resources, payroll, office accommodation, insurances and information technology services.
Brian has over 35 years of experience in the general insurance industry, having worked in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia in a variety of executive positions.

John Anning: General Manager Policy - Regulation Directorate
John was appointed General Manager Policy - Regulation Directorate in April 2007 and brings considerable experience in the areas of public policy and regulatory matters as well as in the areas of corporate and government relations.
Prior to his appointment John worked for the Financial Planning Association as General Manager Policy and Government Relations and was responsible for providing strategic and technical advice on regulation, public policy matters and lobbying activities.
John has also held senior management positions in Government and Corporate Affairs roles with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and Telstra. John was also with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade where his roles included First Secretary, Australian Embassy, Paris.
John has a Master of Public Affairs, Bachelor of Legal Studies and a Bachelor of Arts.

John Driscoll: General Manager Policy Consumer
John was appointed to the position of General Manager Policy – Consumer Directorate after previously holding a number of key senior positions including: Senior Council, Pricewaterhouse Coopers (Legal), Corrs Chamber Westgarth and Director & General Counsel, Credit Suisse First Boston. John also held Senior Finance (Lawyer) and Company Secretary positions with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
Prior to joining the Insurance Council, John was a Partner with Cutler Hughes & Harris, Business Lawyers where he was responsible for the financial services division which he established within the firm.
John holds a Bachelor of Arts (Major in French language and literature), Bachelor of Laws with Honours and Master of Laws.

Karl Sullivan: General Manager Risk & Disaster Planning
As General Manager for the Policy, Risk and Disaster Planning Directorate, Karl is responsible for the facilitation of industry policy and initiatives regarding emerging risks as well as coordinating the industries response and partnership with Government following a significant disaster event.
Karl brings with him significant experience in the disaster planning & risk management field. Prior to joining the Insurance Council, Karl was responsible for global Disaster Planning, Response & Mitigation for the Qantas Group of Companies. In conjunction with that role Karl was active in international and domestic forums focussed on a wide range of disaster events and emerging risks. Prior to Qantas Karl enjoyed a career in the Royal Australian Air Force, including several operational flying tours and appointments responsible for consequence management and disaster planning.

Paul Giles: General Manager Communications
After more than a decade in the public sector including six years as a senior Ministerial advisor, Paul Giles joined the Insurance Council in August 2006.
His background in high profile policy issues and extensive experience in media and communications led to his appointment.
As the General Manager of Communications, Paul is responsible for coordinating the Insurance Council’s advocacy and lobbying activity across all levels of government.
In this role Paul combines his political expertise and media management skills to provide strategic advice and analysis. This includes implementing the Council’s strategic communications strategies and maintaining extensive relationships with the media.
Prior to joining the Council, he was Senior Advisor to the Federal Minister for Immigration and Multicultural Affairs. His career in policy development began in the Department of Finance and Administration and the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
With seven Federal Budgets behind him and considerable experience in crisis management, Paul is ideally suited to his current role at the council delivering significant results for the general insurance industry.
Paul holds a Bachelor of Arts, Double Political Science Major; Bachelor of Arts, Hons, Political Science; and Graduate Diploma, International Relations.
